Casualty 04:33
Cmaj7 Fmaj7 She walks in the room with a confident air C maj7 Fmaj7 With that swing and that thing that can make a man stare Cmaj7 Fmaj 7 She takes a seat and throws back her hair Cmaj7 Fmaj7 And checks all around to see who’s aware Dm7 Am7 G7 She says she’s looking for company Dm7 Am7 G7 There’s nothing to pay but nothing is free Dm7 Am7 G7 She says she’s so cool and so wild and so free Dm7 Am7 G7 Cmaj7 Fmaj7 But …all….. that he can see is that she…. Cmaj7 Fmaj7 Cmaj7 Fmaj7 Is a casualty…… of love She takes his hand and talks for a while Buys him a drink and gives him a smile She paints a picture about her life And asks him straight up does he have a wife She says hey baby how about me, She’s nothing to lose so why shouldn’t she No-one will know they can do as they please But all that he can see etc…. They leave together and step into the night With just a touch she says it’s alright She moves closer and she is holding him tight But he gets scared and whispers goodnight She feels like crying but holds back the tears How could this happen, how could it be She wants him to stay but she wants him to leave But all that he can see etc…

The Key 03:54
D Bm Gonna buy me a boat, gonna sail around the world G A Gonna see all the places that I’ve been told D Bm Get a ticket for a plane, gonna fly like a bird G D And I’m gonna look down on this funny little world (chorus) G D But all I got is this old car, and it won’t even start Bm A G And I don’t wanna go far cos you hold.. D The key to my heart Gonna ride on that railroad, head on down the track And I’ll live like some hobo, and never come back Gonna catch me a pony, gonna ride like the wind Way across that open range, feel the rain on my skin (chorus) Bm F#m G D The higher you fly you know the further you fall Bm F#m G A The more you drive the more those heart strings call (instrument break over verse)

Some Say 03:23
D F#m G A Some say he was a drunken man, some say he was a fool D F#m Bm G Some say it was a selfish thing for a man like that to do D F# Bm E7 But the picture I remember in the laughter and the tears D A G Was that sweet old guitar playing and his voice that I still Em hear Some say he played a game of chance some say it was a waste Some say it was his last ever dance, after the dreams he chased But the picture I remember etc……. * D G D G D So sad, so sad to see a man so low Bm G When the first thing that he wanted A Em Was the last thing he let go Some say he got back what he gave, some say it was a shame Some say he lay down like a lamb, some say that he was brave But the picture I remember etc……

If Only 02:40
D E7 If broken hearts were made of china or clay G D Bm A We’d gather up the pieces and put them safely away D E7 Then one rainy day when we’ve nothing better to do G D Bm A D We’d take out all those fragments and fix ‘em, good as new If promises were made of gold we’d lock them in a chest And keep them the way they’re meant, at least do our best We’d look on them as treasure, and really know their worth And though they may be valuable, they would not cost the earth Bm Em And if life was like a river flowing constantly G D E7 A Rolling and tumbling on its way down to the sea Bm Em I’d sit by that river and look to the other side G D Bm A D And wonder what was over there, and if I should have tried But life ain’t like no river, it takes a different path And if I swam on over, I’d only swim on back And broken hearts will never mend, no matter what they say And promises we meant to keep, are forgotten every day But if broken hearts were really made of china or clay Then my heart could be mended, and I would not feel this way

Oh Susannah 03:12
A m I’ll tell you lies that’ll please you G Or the truth that’ll hurt Am G Cos that’s what we do Am LIving like strangers G With the wisdom of fools C G Those pictures of love, they all turned to blue E D Em C Oh Susannah all of the nights that we cried G Am Bm Am I must confess, in my moments of weakness C G Am G I still think of you sometimes Though you’re not here I still feel you near I still see that very first smile. Dancing in silence To nobody’s tune We tiptoed around and we loved for a while. Oh Susannah, all of the times that we tried When the night grows cold and there’s no-one to hold I still think of you sometimes... still think of you sometimes Those times that we shared And those times that we dared Times that have faded from view. Nights of silence And days all alone, Something inside took the fire out of you Oh Susannah, all of those days passed us by I can’t deny, although I might try I still think of you sometimes repeat chorus and pattern to end

I don’t want any part of it again…

Words 04:29
Am D7 Am E7 Each time I see tail lights of a city homeward bound Am D7 Am Or hear the final shout for that last train out with its E7 mournful sound Am D7 Am I remember that night in September when all the world went E7 wrong Am D7 E7 And the last doors closed and the wind blew cold …and you were Am gone G Am G E7 The sun may rise tomorrow, but I see a storm ahead Am D7 As I think how I watched you walk away F7 E7 Am And all those words I never said Each time I hear the fiddler playing some well worn tune And we all sang along to that old cowboy song like we were howling at the moon I remember I took for granted somehow you’d always be there But my dreams all fell on stony ground just like a doubter’s prayer And the sun may rise tomorrow, but dark clouds fill my head As I think how I watched you walk away And all those words I never said And each time I hear Hank Williams singing his lonesome song Like that falling star I wonder where you are and where did I go wrong And each time I see that train disappearing down the track I can’t believe I didn’t say I need you to come back So the sun may rise tomorrow, and the sky burn gold and red But I’ll see different colours And all those words I never said

Am G Am There’s an old man in the mirror, looks a lot like me Am C Dm Am I live on my own in this crowded place, just him and me C G E7 I see my life through the tv and the newspapers on the floor Am Dm C E7 Am But something keeps on telling me, there’s gotta be more My face may be familiar, what you get is what you see I’ve crossed the line a thousand times and I’ll make no apology In the darkest hours I sing my song to my friends in these four walls But something keeps on telling me, there’s gotta be more F C G Am So remember me with your flowers of red C G Am If it helps you sleep soundly in your bed F C G F Your path of glory brings no reward C G Am So let me be the last one to fall ( Instrument break over verse ) I am one of many, I don’t need your sympathy I’ve fought for love and I’ve fought out of hate and I’ll fight for my dignity I have spoke my mind, I’ve held my tongue, sometimes said nothing at all But something keeps on telling me, there’s gotta be more (chorus) F C G Am So remember me with your flowers of red C G Am Think of me as you bow your head F C G F Your path of glory brings no reward C G Am So let me be the last one to fall

about

Provenance is the new album from Yorkshire based songwriter Phil Hooley. It is the long awaited follow up Hooley's debut solo release Songs From The Back Room which received strong reviews and plenty of airplay across the UK. The ten songs that make up Provenance reflect both the maturity and growing confidence of Hooley's songwriting. The lyrics demand your complete attention, whilst the subtle meanderings of Jim Van Cleve’s fiddle playing and the top notch session players gathered for the recording session, bring just the right levels of light and shade. The album exudes subtlety, with just enough instrumentation to carry the songs and to compliment Phil’s voice. Justin Johnson’s production is sympathetic as always, and allows the songs to live.
